The dreaded New Year’s Resolution for so many of us is to be healthy and get active. If you are looking for some inspiration to keep you motivated, here are some of the UK’s most well known and loved events and fundraisers which will allow you to get fit, have fun and raise money for charity.
Branded the happiest and most colourful 5km fun run you will ever do, the Colour Run takes place in cities all over the UK.
Thousands of runners start the day in a white t-shirt getting covered from head to toe in a rainbow of colours at each kilometre of the course. You don’t have even have to run and can go at your own pace, be it walking, skipping or dancing your way around the course!
After crossing the finish line, runners join the Colour Festival to enjoy a great mix of DJs, MCs, and the infamous ‘Colour Throws’.
If you fancy doing your first mass-participated run with family and friends, enjoy a party and don’t fancy anything too competitive this event is perfect for you.
There are lots of variations of this fun run, including ones with obstacles to master along the way.
In recent years, the Tough Mudder has become a very popular event for groups of friends looking for a gruelling fitness challenge, but one that is also a lot of fun.
The event consists of 10-12 miles of mud (although there are half and longer distance ones too) and obstacles which test your mental grit, camaraderie, strength and fitness. It is not about getting the fastest time or beating the clock, but about completing it with your team and helping others along the way.
Some examples of the obstacles include:
The Block Ness Monster: Mudders have to help one another push, pull and roll their way through 60ft of slick, rotating barriers.
Mud Mile: A favourite, this obstacle features high peaks and deep troughs of mud for you to try to slip and slide your way through.
Rain Man: Guaranteed to induce fear. Make your way through a deep pit where water pours in from above, and it all starts in darkness. This watery trough will test your mental grit in a whole new way.
Tough Mudders are taking place all over the UK so you will be able to find one near you.
Race for Life is a women-only event, raising money for Cancer Research UK. The Race for Life options are endless, whether you want to walk, jog run, hike, or get muddy. There are regular options of 5k, 10k, half marathon, and full marathon all over the country and so there will definitely be something for you, near you.
Experience London by night and take in all the beautiful sights whilst raising money for breast cancer research. Choose from power walking the whole 26.2 miles of The Full Moon Marathon or alternatively do the Half Moon. Men can take part too!
Most walks start at midnight and finish in the early hours of the morning depending on which course you are doing and your pace.
Wearing a bra to take on a challenge is the Walk the Walk trademark and one of the reasons why they manage to raise so much awareness and money.
MoonWalks also take place in other cities across the UK, and other events include a London to Brighton walk and Thamespath challenge.
